Mlata: Court: Cannabis trafficker jailed for seven years

The Malta Independent On-Line

Thursday 19 Jan 2012

A cannabis trafficker was jailed for seven years and fined €16,300 after being found guilty of possessing over 1.4 kilograms of the drug in circumstances denoting it was to be sold to third parties.

Albert Grima, 30, of Naxxar, was charged in June 2008 with trafficking the drug to make a profit and with its possession.

He was discovered to have been preparing the drug in blocks for sale in a room situated in a field and which his father owned. He was found in possession of 1,445.2 grams of cannabis resin, divided into six blocks, which had an approximate street value of €9,270.

Following police investigations, it resulted that Grima had had another block which he had sold for €640.

In handing judgment, the court, presided over by Mr Justice Michael Mallia, took into consideration Grima’s admission before a jury was formed, but noted this could not be considered an early plea.

The court also ordered the confiscation of all objects related to the crime, as well as money and property Grima owned, in favour of the government. The drug, which is currently exhibited in court, is to be destroyed unless the Attorney General informs the court it intends to appeal the sentence within 15 days.
