UK: Cottage turned into cannabis farm

POLICE discovered that a Strathearn man had turned his house into a small-scale cannabis farm when they called at his property.

Officers had gone there in connection with another undisclosed matter but became suspicious when they detected the smell of the drug wafting out the door.

Adrian Mailer (23), of Meadowbank Farm Cottage, Dunning, invited them in.

Fiscal Helen Nisbet told Perth Sheriff Court that they found a "tent" in the bedroom containing three small cannabis plants, along with a lamp. Ten seedlings were then discovered in a cupboard, along with other drugs paraphernalia.

Officers were unable to put a value on the cannabis because of the early stages of growth.

Mailer was fined £450 after pleading guilty to producing the controlled Class B drug at his home on December 5 last year.

A not guilty plea was accepted to a second charge of having cannabis in his possession.

Solicitor Mark Alder said the drug was for his client's own use.

"He suffers from stress and cannabis helps in that regard," added the lawyer.

Imposing the fine, Sheriff Michael Fletcher said: "I take into account there was a relatively small number of plants although you obviously had the equipment to enable you to grow cannabis.

"I also take into account that the yield wasn't able to be ascertained."

The accused, who earns £358 net a week, was allowed one month to pay the penalty.
