UK: Jury fails to reach a verdict in drug trial

News and Star, Carlisle

Tuesday 24 Jan 2012

THE trial of a man accused of giving a friend £5,000 to help set up a west Cumbrian "cannabis factory" ended yesterday without a verdict.

The jury spent nearly seven hours deliberating before telling the judge

The prosecution now has a week to decide whether to take the case to a retrial in front of a different jury.

Andrew Carter, 44, of Copperas Hill, Harrington, Workington, was accused at Carlisle Crown Court of providing the money to pay for the electrical system at a "cannabis factory" set up by friend Mark Bower in a unit on the Glasson industrial estate in Maryport. He did not deny giving Bower the money but said it was to pay for a "boob job" for Bower's girlfriend, Dawn Holliday.

Carter pleaded not guilty to becoming involved in a money laundering arrangement with Bower and his friend Edward Devlin, who have since been convicted of drugs offences.

The prosecution said he paid the money – in £10 notes that he withdrew without warning from his bank in Workington – knowing it would be used to pay for the electrics at the cannabis factory.

Prosecuting barrister Tim Evans said Bower and Devlin – who has recently died – set up the sophisticated cannabis operation with about 400 plants under lights, heating and an automatic watering system. When they needed help to pay for the necessary electrical installation they approached Carter, who provided the money for it, he said.
