Wales: Woman who grew drug to stop pain fined £160
Carmarthen Journal Wednesday 01 Feb 2012 Appearing before Llanelli magistrates last Wednesday, Mary McGill Usher, 41, of Belvedere Avenue, admitted possessing herbal cannabis on October 21 and to growing a 5ft tall cannabis plant on the same day. Prosecuting, Gerald Neave said police had gone to Usher's home with a search warrant. Usher handed police a small amount of cannabis — worth £5 — wrapped in a piece of paper, the court heard. Police found a grinder used to prepare the drug on a coffee table and found the plant upstairs. During police interview Usher admitted to possessing the drug, saying she had grown the plant from a seed for personal consumption. Defending, David Williams said: "The cannabis was intended for personal use. There is a practical intention; she suffers from carpal tunnel syndrome, a chronic condition affecting her wrists; she's in pain and discomfort. "She does find the known relaxing effects of cannabis to ease the pain and discomfort." He added: "The plant itself was grown from a seed; there is notable by its absence a lack of any sophistication in cultivating it, there's no use of any hydroponics." Usher was fined a total of £160 with costs of £85 plus a £15 surcharge. http://www.thisissouthwales.co.uk/Woman-grew-drug-stop-pain-fined-pound-160/story-15096430-detail/story.html
