Rabat, Morocco - Moroccan gendarmerie announced on Thursday that it seized 11.790 tonnes of chira (cannabis resin) hidden in a refrigerating lorry on the highway between Rabat and Casablanca.

It said that the drugs were seized Wednesday by its members in charge of road control who discovered the drugs aboard the lorry which was loaded with empty crates of drinks.

According to a communiqué, the lorry driver and the owner of the goods have been detained and would appear in court soon.

The gendarmerie have also impounded the truck.

Last December, the Gendarmerie seized, in Sidi Allal El Bahraoui, 2.2 tonnes of chira concealed in a lorry.

Two months earlier, the Moroccan police seized 1.757 tonnes of cannabis resin on a beach near Tangiers (North).

According to the United Nations Office against Drung and Crime (ONUDC), Morocco is reportedly the biggest chira producer in the world.
