Ireland: Cultivating cannabis 'simply for his own use'

The Kerryman

Wednesday 08 Feb 2012

THE case against a man charged with cultivating cannabis plants has been adjourned following a request from his solicitor.

Pim Van Hoppe (37), of Rossboy, Kenmare, is charged with the cultivation of 15 cannabis plants on his property on January 12 last year. Van Hoppe is also charged with unlawful possession of cannabis herb.

The plants were found in a press with light and heat, according to gardaí. Superintendent Michael O'donovan told last Friday's sitting of Kenmare District Court that the value of the find has been estimated at €5,320.

Van Hoppe, with no previous convictions, indicated through his solicitor Pádraig O'connell that he will be pleading guilty. Mr O'connell applied for a short adjournment to allow his client undergo psychiatric assessment. "He suffers from depression and panic attacks," the solicitor said. He added that Van Hoppe was cultivating the cannabis "simply for his own use".

"There was no question of sale or supply to others. Garda O'regan, the investigating officer, has said Mr Van Hoppe is not a bad fellow. "He co-operated fully in a question and answer session in the garda station. I am seeking a short adjournment for the preparation of a psychiatric report. He has been attending a GP and psychiatric services," Mr O'connell said.

Garda Seán O'regan said he was satisfied the plants were not being cultivated for commercial purposes.

Judge James O'connor adjourned the matter until the March sitting of the court.
