POLICE targeted youths suspected of dealing drugs to schoolchildren in a series of co-ordinated morning raids on their homes in yesterday.

Two 15-year-olds were arrested and a small amount of street-ready cannabis was seized following the day of action by officers in West Swindon.

It came after intelligence provided by the community suggested drug deals were taking place in the local area, including around Lydiard Park Academy.

More than 20 officers, including an Armed Response Group unit, were involved in three simultaneous raids at 9am on the houses of three juveniles, all believed to be linked in the supply of the class B drug.

As well as £100 in cannabis, paraphernalia related to the supply of the drug was also seized at two of the houses.

PC Steve Yeates, the community beat manager for West Swindon South, said the seizures would serve to disrupt the supply of cannabis in the area.

He said: "In two of the addresses, we managed to seize around 200 bags, which look as if they were ready to be used in supplying drugs, as well as around 30g, or a little more than £100, of herbal cannabis.

"We got two of our three targets and one has been arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply, while the other on suspicion of possession. Both were taken to Gablecross police station for questioning.

"The action was around the supply of drugs in the area and from the work we have been doing with the school and the community we acted on information we received.

"We are trying to crackdown on youths getting involved in drugs – we don't want them smoking or dealing in drugs and so this was to disrupt that from going on around the school.

"The youths we arrested are not students of Lydiard Park Academy but they live in West Swindon.

"With the amount of cannabis we seized, along with the paraphernalia, will obviously stop that activity for now."

Lydiard Park Academy headteacher Clive Zimmerman said the school had taken part in a police exercise about drugs awareness at the end of last year.

"A sniffer dog checked all pupils as they arrived at school one morning," he said.

"Along with the other schools we had a totally clean bill of health, with no illicit substances being identified.

"This was to reassure parents drug-related issues remain a rare occurrence in Swindon schools."
