UK: Dealer is jailed after he sold drugs like an ice-cream man

Scunthorpe Telegraph

Thursday 09 Feb 2012

Police caught a man selling cannabis in the street in a brazen "stop me and buy one" way that was usually favoured by ice cream sellers, a court heard.

Sam Blackbourn has been jailed for eight months after parking a vehicle off an alleyway and selling the drug in a desperate bid to clear his debts, a court was told.

Blackbourn, 20, of Copplestone Court, Torrington Road, Scunthorpe, admitted possessing cannabis with intent to supply and supplying cannabis on October 17 and using threatening words or behaviour on May 22.

Helen Wheatley, prosecuting, told Grimsby Crown Court that undercover police spotted a vehicle being used off an alleyway in Scunthorpe for selling cannabis.

Judge Robert Moore likened it to a "stop me and buy one" ice cream vehicle – with the difference that people could stop Blackbourn and buy cannabis and not ice cream.

Police found 29 plastic bags, some smaller bags, a set of scales and £95 cash.

Blackbourn said the cannabis had been supplied to him by someone further up the chain and that he was going to pay for the drugs by his own sales.

The court also heard Blackbourn and others were asked to leave the Encore bar on Doncaster Road, Scunthorpe, after an incident. Tempers flared after he was assaulted and there was a skirmish, the court heard.

The court was told that others were assaulted, words were exchanged and Blackbourn threatened the person he believed had assaulted him.

Edward Bindloss, mitigating, said Blackbourn thought he could "make a quick buck" out of selling cannabis to help pay his debts and find a job. It was a one-off incident after he was offered the cannabis, he said.

"It was the action of a stupid and immature man," said Mr Bindloss.

Judge Moore told the court: "The public need to be reassured that people who deliberately sell drugs for money will go to custody regardless of any strong personal mitigation."

Judge Moore ordered that the £95 seized should be given to the local police drug squad to use in the fight against drugs.
