UK: Bootle man tells jury cannabis should be legalised

A MAN accused of growing cannabis at his home defended himself in court by claiming it should be legalised.

Thomas Speed, 39, was caught with 16 cannabis plants when police called at his home.

Prosecutor Chris Hopkins told Liverpool Crown Court the set up was "small and unsophisticated" but did involve fans and lights.

He said the amount of drugs would have been worth between £4,000 and £8,000 if sold on but it was accepted he was smoking it himself.

A jury found Speed guilty of cannabis production.

Judge Robert Warnock told him: "The jury weren't very impressed by your views."

He ordered Speed, of Park Street, Bootle, to carry out 200 hours community service.
