UK: Cannabis smoker 'didn't know possession was illegal'

Dorset Echo

Monday 27 Feb 2012

A CANNABIS smoker who said he didn't know that possessing the drug was illegal has been fined.

Keiran John Mruk, of Rivers Mead, Sturminster Newton, appeared at Weymouth Magistrates Court where he pleaded guilty to possessing the Class B drug.

He was charged with possessing 3.9 grammes but this was changed to 1.4g after Mruk made representations to the court.

The court heard from prosecutor Andrew Newman that Mruk had placed some of the drugs down the back of a television set and another two bags down the side of the chair where he sat when police entered the property.

Mruk told the court: "There's not much I can say. I was only smoking it I didn't realise it was an offence to possess it in your own home. I only thought it was an offence if you were out on the street." The court heard that Mruk already has £779.20 to pay the court in fines which are being deducted from his benefits.

When told by chairman of the bench Sarah Pinhey that he would be fined £65 for the offence, Mruk said: "When I got arrested, I had to pay £70 to get home. So I have already paid more than £100 just for this one thing. For £10 worth of smoke – it's just stupid."
