UK: Judge blasts 'bloody fool' Trusted article source icon

Cornish Guardian

Wednesday 29 Feb 2012

A PADSTOW businessman was described as a "monumental bloody fool" by a judge after being convicted of drugs offences.

A counterfeit £10 note led police to the door of 34-year-old Gavin Hill, of Lancaster Crescent, St Eval.

When police searched his home they found drugs, scales and cash.

Hill had already pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to the possession of cannabis with intent to supply, and the possession of herbal cannabis and ecstasy.

A dealer's list was in his bedroom and he accepted that he had supplied cannabis resin on a commercial basis. The resin had a street value of more than £900 and the ecstasy £161.

Recorder Simon Levene told him: "You are a monumental bloody fool. I cannot imagine what you thought you were getting up to. Using drugs is one thing, but to supply others is a completely different matter."

Ron Ede, for the defence, revealed that Hill ran a sandwich business in Padstow and it was because someone had passed a counterfeit £10 note that he came to the attention of the police.

Imposing a community order involving 100 hours of unpaid work, Recorder Levene told Hill he had been at the bottom of the scale of dealers and, having read testimonials, it was clear he was genuinely contrite.

"You have family responsibilities and a duty to your staff not to have them turfed out of a job because you are sent to prison," he added.
