UK: Prison drug smuggler handed a jail sentence

Lancashire Eveing Post

Sunday 11 Mar 2012

A woman who smuggled £5 worth of cannabis into prison has been put behind bars for the offence.

Alice Moorhead, 27, of Leyland Road, Lostock Hall, was caught on CCTV reaching into her bra and producing a small quantity of the drug in the visiting area at HMP Preston.

Her boyfriend Simon Lever, a serving prisoner, picked the package up from the table and tried to swallow it, but he started to choke and came to the attention of the guards.

Moorhead was arrested and admitted she had handed over what she believed to be "a joint's worth" of cannabis to Lever, as he was being bullied in prison.

The drugs were never recovered but the following day Lever was rushed to Royal Preston Hospital after the package split.

Cannabis and subutex were found in his system and Lever was subject to disciplinary procedures in jail.

Sharon Watson, defending, said: "She has taken an utterly realistic approach in terms of what is going to happen to her today. She knows a prison sentence is inevitable."

The court heard Moorhead lived a chaotic lifestyle and had committed crime to fund her drug habit.

She pleaded guilty to bringing or conveying a list A article into a prison.

Recorder John Leeming, sentencing, said: "You will have been told that the courts take the supply of drugs into custody as being particularly serious.

"That is because drugs have a currency.

"There is one single feature applies to all cases of this nature and that is to impose deterrent sentences when drugs are taken into custody."

He added drugs in prison increased the difficulty of maintaining a safe environment for staff and inmates.

Moorhead was jailed for 16 months and told she would serve half her sentence before release.
