Malta: No Cannabis-based medicine licensed in Malta

Times of Malta

Thursday 22 Mar 2012

No Cannabis-based medicines are licensed for use in Malta, Health Minister Joseph Cassar said in reply to a parliamentary question by Silvio Parnis (PL). He said a detailed evaluation would be made when an application for such licensing is made.

Meanwhile, Home Affairs Minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici, when asked about people who carry cannabis-based medicines to Malta for their personal use, said that the possession of narcotics for medical treatment is regulated by the Schengen Agreement.

It provides that: "As regards the movement of travellers to the territories of the contracting parties or their movement within these territories, persons may carry the narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances that are necessary for their medical treatment provided that, at any check, they produce a certificate issued or authenticated by a competent authority of their State of residence."
