UK: 'Cannabis for menopause'

Central Somerset Gazette

Friday 23 Mar 2012

A 32-year-old woman has appeared in court charged with producing cannabis with an estimated street value of £56,000.

Samantha Jane Terry, of High Street, Littleton, near Somerton, was charged with producing 227 plants of cannabis at an address in Gurney Slade on or before January 3.

She was also alleged to have had 283.33g of cannabis in her possession when she appeared before South Somerset Magistrates. She did not enter any pleas.

The court was told that the police made the discovery at the defendant's former address but she had claimed that she was growing the plants for her own personal use as essential oils for the treatment of menopause and neuralgia symptoms.

After hearing details about the potential yield and value of the cannabis plants the magistrates refused to accept jurisdiction for the case.

They ordered that Terry must be committed to stand trial at Taunton Crown Court and adjourned the case until May 10 for committal papers to be prepared.

Until her next appearance before the court at Yeovil the defendant was released on unconditional bail.
