UK: Drug user grew own cannabis

A CANNABIS smoker who decided to "grow his own" was spared jail by a judge.

Police found a dozen plants in the loft at the home of Adam Williams, Stafford Crown Court heard.

Pat Sullivan, prosecuting, said although the plants were in a poor condition, they could have produced enough cannabis to be sold on the streets for £2,000.

Some of the crop had already been harvested and was in a carrier bag.

But in a basis of plea, Williams said he was a regular cannabis user and decided to grow his own and share with friends.

Williams, aged 24, of Coppice Gardens, Stone, who admitted a charge of producing cannabis, was ordered to do 150 hours' unpaid community work.

But Judge John Maxwell told him: "I don't want to send out the message that you can go around growing your own cannabis. It's against the law and it is no excuse you were going to smoke it yourself and share some of it with friends."

Peter McCartney, defending, said Williams had some experience in horticulture, but added: "This was a particularly amateurish growing scheme; the plants were in poor health, yellowing around the edges."
