Namibia: 'Every Second Person' in Omaheke Carries Cannabis
All Africa Wednesday 04 Apr 2012 Abel told Nampa in an interview on Tuesday morning that drug dealing in the Omaheke Region, especially in cannabis, is a concern and it is on increase. "Generally speaking, every second person walking in the streets of Gobabis is carrying cannabis," he charged. This came to light after the police conducted an operation around Gobabis, Ben-Hur and Drimiopsis, during which more than 20 cannabis "drug dealers" were arrested on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Approximately 195 grammes of cannabis with a street value of N$ 315, was confiscated from each dealer, said Abel. During the same operation, the Omaheke Police confiscated 20 dangerous weapons from people who were entertaining themselves at different shebeens in the Epako township, at Ben-Hur and at night clubs in Drimiopsis. The weapons included pocket knives, sharp home-made objects and pangas. He said fines were also issued to more than 20 motor vehicle operators, during the same operation by the Omaheke traffic division of the Namibian Police (NamPol). These road offenders were charged with, amongst others, drinking and driving, recklessness, negligent driving, driving a motor vehicle without a valid driving license, expired motor license discs and operating un-roadworthy vehicles. "The traffic officers generated about N$44 800 in one operation here over the past weekend alone," said Abel. The offenders and alleged drug dealers all appeared in the Gobabis Magistrate's Court on Monday. http://allafrica.com/stories/201204050048.html
