The long-time campaigner for the drug to be returned to the medicine chest made his prediction after health minister Gisela Stuart told him clinical trials of cannabis-based medicines had been approved by the Medicines Control Agency. In a written reply to the MP, she said the purpose was to demonstrate safety and establish correct dosages to provide the most effective relief to sufferers of multiple sclerosis and other neurological disorders. The minister added that information gathered from trials would be assessed by the MCA in coming to a decision about whether a product should be licensed for marketing in the United Kingdom. "If a marketing authorisation were to be issued by the MCA, we would seek to modify the current Misuse of Drugs Act controls on the use of cannabis," she said. Mr Prentice, secretary of the all party multiple sclerosis group, commented: "This is great news as we are slowly but surely getting there. "People whose ill health has made them turn to cannabis face risks. Conventional drugs have to be manufactured to a strict quality standard and clearly this does not apply when people are forced to buy cannabis on the street."
