Ireland: Cancer sufferer who grew cannabis spared jail

A LONG-TERM cancer sufferer has escaped a prison term despite being found growing cannabis plants worth more than €5,000.

Jacqueline Corris appeared in Ennis District Court, Co Clare, yesterday, charged with possessing and cultivating the cannabis plants, without a licence, contrary to the Misuse of Drugs Act.

The court was told the accused used for pain relief for her cancer.

Garda Francis Brennan told the court that during a search of Ms Corris's home on October 24, 2011, gardai found 13 cannabis plants with a street value of €5,200.

Gda Brennan said Ms Corris admitted that she grew the plants for her own personal use and that they were to treat her own medical condition.

Joe Chambers, defending, said his client was "a long-standing cancer sufferer from her early teens and that would be her main problem".

Ms Corris initially appeared in court last February when the case was adjourned for the preparation of a Probation Report.

Ms Corris, of Connolly Villas, Ennis, is self-employed and has no previous convictions.

Judge Pat Durcan said: "The (probation) report is very positive and one must compliment Ms Corris on the efforts she has made to remedy the situation."

He said he would adjourn the case for six months and if there are no difficulties of any kind between now and then, he would strike out the charges.

Judge Durcan remanded Ms Corris on continuing bail, to re-appear before Ennis District Court on October 10.
