UPDATE 3.10pm: MORE than 250 police officers were involved in a series of drug raids in Melbourne's north west today.

The officers simultaneously executed warrants at 29 properties across Brimbank, Melton, Wyndham and Hume, uncovering more than $29 million worth of marijuana and equipment, and arrested 12 people.

Codenamed Operation Permute the swoop was the culmination of a seven month investigation into an alleged organised crime syndicate with links to Vietnam.

The raids uncovered one of the biggest hauls of cannabis in Victoria Police history and police are still working to establish the extent of the crop.

So far they have seized more than 5200 plants with an estimated value of $20 million. This comes after an earlier raid in which police seized 2000 plants and 53kg of dried cannabis.

"Thirty-seven different houses have had marijuana growing in them, and it'’s not just one room, its all the rooms in a lot of these lots the houses," he said.

"The set up in the houses was very sophisticated in the way they bypassed power and the water systems used to grow the marijuana.

"It's a very interesting set up and the way they've constructed it means the plants grow a lot quicker."

Supt Mutton said police were interviewing a person they believed was the syndicate leader.

The investigation was led by the Fawkner Divisional Response Unit and supported by the Criminal Proceeds Squad, Crime Department, Dog Squad, and local uniform members and detectives.
