UK: Neighbours forced to flee as cannabis farm catches fire

Bolton News

Thursday 19 Apr 2012

A BLAZE ripped through the roof of a house after a cannabis farm caught fire.

Neighbours escaped from their homes in Tig Fold Road, Farnworth, at 7.10pm on Tuesday.

The occupier of the semidetached house was out when the blaze took hold.

The fire was caused by an overloaded electrical supply.

It is understood equipment was being used to grow cannabis in the house.

Ben Cartwright, watch manager at Farnworth fire station, said: "It was difficult for the firefighters as they were scrambling to get to the loft.

"Half of the roof is missing at the back of the house.

"We managed to get the fire out quickly and stopped it from spreading to the neighbouring property.

"Despite the circumstances of this fire, we would warn people to be careful when putting things in their loft and not to overload the electricity supply."

A neighbour, who asked not to be named, said: "I saw black smoke coming out of the roof. I was scared so I called the fire brigade and I ran down the street with my little one.

"It is such a mess now — the roof is totally gone at the back. I had no idea there were drugs there.

That is scary, I am shocked.

"The man who lives there is really nice, he has a heart of gold and would do anything for anyone."

? Last month an electrical fault — caused by the supply being tampered with to power a cannabis farm — caused a blaze at a house in Tonge Moor.

Firefighters who were called at 10pm on Monday, March 5, found about 80 plants in two bedrooms of the house in Ainsworth Lane, which had a street value of £28,000.

A similar number of plants in the loft are thought to have been destroyed in the fire.
