US: Happy 4-20: Code for Smoke Marijuana Day

Every year on April 20, cannabis smokers spark up protest to the legalization of marijuana. Some Laguna Niguel residents think it's just an excuse to light up.

It seems as though for every step forward California takes on the road to legalizing marijuana it takes two steps back. With the recent closure of medical marijuana dispensaries throughout South County, cannabis enthusiasts are going to have to turn elsewhere this year to celebrate the infamous "4-20 celebration."

"Since almost all of marijuana clinics have closed down in South County, many kids are going back to the traditional way of buying weed from their local drug dealers," said Tom Backgram, who lives in the community and knows most of the so-called dealers. "The people who used to sell weed to the marijuana clinics are now selling in greater quantities to street dealers because demand has gone up."

Suite A, in Laguna Niguel, is the only brick and mortar dispensary in the South County area left. Medical marijuana patients now have to drive as far as Santa Ana to fill their recommendation to celebrate 4-20 today.

Contrary to popular belief this stoner holiday is not Bob Marley's birthday or even the date of his death. The term 4-20 started being used when a group of teenagers at San Rafael High School made a pack with each other to search for a mysterious cannabis crop that they had learned about. The group had chosen the Louise Pasteur Statue as their rendezvous point every day at around 4:20 p.m. The students never did find the marijuana, but did make history by coining the phrase that ultimately turned into codeword for teens smoking pot.

Now every year on April 20, people gather to celebrate and consume cannabis to advocate the decriminalization of medical marijuana in the United States.

Here is what some local Laguna Niguel residents have to say about today, 4-20:

"It's a symbolic day that stands for freedom, peace, and social equality that is celebrated by smoking a plant that subsides any anger, or hate that could exist," said Pascal Staeheli, 21.

"I think it's just a day where people make excuses to smoke pot, it's just like Cinco de Mayo and St. Patrick's Day is an excuse to drink. It's all for fun," said Allie Marie, 18.

"It is a poor excuse for kids to cut class and spend the whole day getting high," said Devin Lari, 21. " I doubt this is some kind of political demonstration."
