Canada: 4/20 Attracts Canada: Cannabis Smokers And Talk Of Legalization

CTV News

Saturday 21 Apr 2012

VICTORIA – Smoking marijuana is illegal in public, but for one day a year police turn a blind eye. April 20th is the day cannabis connoisseurs make the case to legalize the herbal drug, which as of 2001 is only allowed for medicinal use.

Vancouver sees thousands or supporters every year, rumored to be the birthplace of protest. In Victoria more than a thousand people arrived at Centennial Square to smoke in the open.

The gathering aims to heighten awareness for the "legalize marijuana" movement, and even academics say there could be big benefits. Dr. Tim Stockwell, Director at The Centre for Addictions Research at Uvic says if cannabis was decriminalized it would be parking ticket instead of conviction. And if it was legalized there would be a lot of work involved, but would see huge profits for the government, including more money for schools, and hospitals.

However, it appears the Harper Government is moving to strengthen laws against marijuana, establishing new crime minimums. NDP leaders who support decriminalization say this will only clog the courts and cost Canadians more money.

Study's show smoking large amounts at a young age can lead to psychotic episodes and possibly even schizophrenia. And that is why those advocating to make it legal say an age limit, and strict regulations should be imposed.
