UK: Cannabis grower escapes jail term Charles Thomson Yellow Advertiser Friday 27 Apr 2012 Robert Flint, 21, currently of no fixed abode, was handed a community order at Basildon Crown Court. The court heard that police had searched Flint's then home in Castle Walk on May 26, 2011. They found herbal cannabis in his kitchen cabinet and a 'moderately sophisticated' hydroponic set-up in his bedroom, containing eight cannabis plants. Flint insisted the cannabis was for his own use and denied dealing, but police seized his mobile phone and extracted a series of messages between Flint and his customers. He then entered guilty pleas on one count of possession with intent to supply and another of cannabis production. Judge David Owen-Jones told him: "It is perfectly clear to me that you had a group of individuals who you were supplying. "The amount is relatively small and I don’t know how long it had been going on." However, the judge told Flint he was impressed by his work ethic, which had rescued him from an immediate custodial sentence. He said: "You have come within a whisker of going inside this morning." The judge gave Flint a 12 month prison term, suspended for two years and ordered him to carry out 250 hours of unpaid work. He also ordered Flint to pay £340 in costs, adding: "I see no reason at all why the public purse should pay for the costs of this prosecution."
