UK: Cannabis is 'number one drug' for dealers and users in Warrington

CANNABIS is currently the number one drug in Warrington for dealers and users, according to Cheshire Police.

DC Jamie Thompson, of the northern area dedicated drugs unit, said there has been an 'explosion' of cannabis farms found in the town.

He said: "Cannabis is a doorstep market. You can grow it yourself and you don't have to split your profits with anybody.

"We have seen an explosion from small growths with a handful of plants to different sized commercial properties with 300 to 400 plants in an industrial unit.

"It is a cause for concern that we as a force have reacted to."

Statistics published earlier this week by the Association of Police Officers ranks Cheshire as the 9th worst county nationally for cannabis farms per 100,000 residents.

A specialist operation was launched in March to tackle the rise of cannabis in Warrington.

Over a three week period 20 warrants were served with 13 farms uncovered and 11 arrests made.

But that only 'scratches at the surface', according to DC Thompson, who believes that cannabis users do not realise how dangerous the drug is.

Popular skunk varieties can contain up to 40 per cent of THC, the chemical that can cause psychosis, compared to 3 per cent in resin strains 40 years ago.

DC Thompson said: "Cannabis is different now, the plant has been modified to increase the psycho-active substance.

"To say that cannabis is the same now as it was in the sixties would be like saying a pint of beer then is the same as a pint of whiskey now.

"It's a completely different drug that should be a class A but people see it as a socially acceptable and that is the big battle.

"They don't see the change in the drug I have seen in Warrington.

"It is psychologically addictive and we are seeing burglaries and robberies committed to pay off cannabis debts.

"We are talking about a serious drug that is having a profound affect on policing, crime, the community and health service.

"Turning a blind eye to cannabis is the same as turning a blind eye to crack cocaine or heroin, and people's perceptions need to change."
