Australia: Calls for cannabis to be taken off Wada banned list
The Week Thursday 03 May 2012 IT'S a drug with few obvious performance ehancing properties and now sports bodies in Australia are asking the World Anti-Doping Agency to remove cannabis from its list of prohibited substances. They are pushing for an overhaul of the Wada code and want dope taken off the list of doping agents. "Australia's Coalition of Major Professional and Participation Sports - which includes the AFL [Australian rules football], the NRL [rugby league], Cricket Australia and Tennis Australia - has a view that while cannabis is dangerous, it should not be treated as performance enhancing," reported the Sydney Morning Herald. Malcom Speed of the coalition told Seven News: "It's not performance enhancing so I think we are well and truly entitled to raise it with Wada and argue that it be taken away from the list." The various bodies in Australia want cannabis treated as an illicit drug and believe that anyone found using it should be dealt with under rules governing those drugs. They say that athletes found using cannabis are unlikely to be doing so to gain an advantage over their rivals. Current Wada rules say that a substance can be banned if it meets two out of three criteria: it is performance enhancing, against the spirit of sport, or dangerous to an athlete's health. "It is widely acknowledged that in fast-paced sports cannabis does not enhance performance. Yet in pursuits where a steady hand is required - such as pistol shooting and golf - the drug could prove advantageous," states the Melbourne Age. But it seems as though the Australian argument could bear fruit. The paper quotes Wada chief John Fahey who said: "There are some substances today that are banned in some sports but not in others. That may well be an option they may wish to come to the board with in due course." ยท Read more: http://www.theweek.co.uk/sport/drugs-sport/46635/australia-calls-cannabis-be-taken-wada-banned-list#ixzz1tohZKamp
