UP TO 250 million people use illicit drugs worldwide, with up to 38 million "problem" users and up to 21 million people regularly injecting illegal substances Australian research published in medical journal The Lancet says.

Cannabis was the most widely used drug globally, with an estimated 191 million people globally using the drug in 2008.

But the joint study by The University of Queensland's Centre for Clinical Research and Melbourne's Burnet Institute found opiates, such as heroin, caused the most harm to users and were the most likely to cause death.

The University of Queensland's Professor Wayne Hall said amphetamines, sold under street names including "ice" and "meth" in Australia, and related stimulants were the second most harmful type of drug for users, while cocaine came in third.
