A driver who jumped a red light and caused a crash had taken cannabis, a court heard.

Stephen Lockhart, 28, failed a police test after a collision involving his BMW and another vehicle on Spencer Street in Carlisle city centre.

Analysis of his blood after the smash on March 8 "showed evidence of previous use of cannabis".

Lockhart, of North Road, Aspatria, was banned from the road for 17 months and fined £400 following an appearance at Carlisle Magistrates' Court this week. He admitted driving while unfit through drugs and driving without due care and attention.

Diane Jackson, prosecuting, said Lockhart had admitted to police it was his fault and he had missed a red light.

The court heard Lockhart had given a friend a lift and "decided to do a couple of laps around town before heading off home".

Martin McAllister, in mitigation, said Lockhart had recently broken up with his long term girlfriend and was "very low about that".

"Somebody offered him some cannabis," he said. "Stupidly he accepted."

Lockhart was also told to pay £85 court costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
