Czech and Slovakia: Thousands march to decriminalise pot

Sky News Australia

Sunday 06 May 2012

Thousands of Czechs and Slovaks demonstrated on Saturday in their capitals for the decriminalisation of marijuana and other cannabis products.

Gathering under the slogan Million Marijuana March - a play on the 1995 Million Man March in Washington DC - the protesters sought to open a public discussion over the criminalisation and stigmatisation of cannabis products, leaders of the protests told reporters.

'It's absurd that imported marijuana or that produced in licensed laboratories is used in clinical medicine as a legal healing product, yet every patient or retired person who wants to cultivate a little on their own is harshly punished,' the Czech news agency CTK quoted a spokesman of the organisers as saying.

The protests drew more than 7,000 people in Prague, according to CTK, while in Bratislava, media estimates put the total at about 100.
