Bermuda: Magistrate To Defendant: ‘Buy Food Not Weed’

35-year-old Vincent Darrell, who said that he was the father of four children, pleaded guilty to possessing 13.11 grams of cannabis, was fined $1,000, and was told by Senior Magistrate Archie Warner that he should be "buying food not weed."

This happened in Friday's [May 18] Plea Court. After entering the plea of guilty, the Senior Magistrate was told that Darrell had been stopped on 19th August 2011 on Skeeter's Hill.

On being searched he had two rolled cigarettes in his possession. On analysis the two cigarettes proved to contain 0.95 grams of cannabis.

Following that stop-n-search, Police went to Darrell's home and searched his home. There they found more cannabis. One plastic bag contained 1.4 grams, another bag had 10.76 grams.

Darrell told Police that it: "All belongs to me."Given the opportunity to explain his actions, Darrell told the Senior Magistrate: "I apologize. It was my birthday. I was just using it for a little easy."

When Darrell asked for time to pay the $1,000 fine, the Magistrate commented about buying food. Darrell was then given until 19th June to pay the $1,000 fine.
