A FRAUD analyst who started growing cannabis in his apartment for his own use as he was working nights, was having trouble sleeping during the day, a court heard.

Geog Kragiel (30) didn't want to buy the cannabis from drug dealers so he decided to try and grow it himself.

A garda accepted that it was not a sophisticated operation.

The defendant admitted before Dublin District Court to possession of cannabis as well as cultivating the drug at his apartment at Priory Hall in Donaghmede.

Warrant

Garda James Muldowney said he obtained a search warrant and searched the defendant's apartment.

A cannabis plant was found during the course of the search. as well as a small amount of a headshop drug. The street value of the drug was €600.

The court heard the defendant, a German national who has lived and worked in Ireland for five years, has never been in trouble before.

Garda Muldowney said he accepted it was a "first time attempt" by Kragiel to grow cannabis, and that he had co-operated fully with the garda investigation.

Judge Reilly fined Kragiel €1,200.
