Teens use more drugs

TEENAGERS are using more drugs but smoking less, according
to statistics released yesterday. The figures from the
National Office of Statistics showed that 12 per cent of 11-
to 15-year-olds in England had used drugs in the past year -
compared with 11 per cent in 1998. Cannabis was the most
likely drug to have been used, followed by glue, gas and
"poppers".

The survey, commissioned by the UK Anti-drugs Co-ordination
Unit, showed that boys were more likely to use drugs than
girls. More than 9,000 pupils in 340 schools were questioned
about smoking, drugs and drink for the survey. The number of
11- to 15-year-olds who smoke regularly fell from 11 per
cent to nine per cent in 1999.
