Scotland: Cannabis grower by-passed meter

A 66-YEAR-OLD man who grew 20 cannabis plants in his garage was this week warned that he could face a jail sentence.

Terence Dowling pleaded guilty to producing the drug at his home in Willie Ross Place, Kilmarnock, in October last year.

Zaid Hassan, prosecuting, told Kilmarnock Sheriff Court that police went to the house at 2.15am about an unrelated matter and found Dowling in the company of five other people.

"The accused told the police that there was cannabis cultivation in the garage," he said.

A full search was carried out after police gained a warrant.

Along with twenty mature plants – with a potential value of £3400 – they found a state-of-the-art cultivation system.

"It was very sophisticated," said Mr Hassan. "He had, in fact, by-passed the electricity meter."

When he was interviewed, Dowling said that he was a heavy and regular cannabis smoker and that the plants were all for his own use.

"He admitted he had been growing this cannabis for over a year," said Mr Hassan.

Neil McPherson, defending, said that Dowling was already subject to a community payback order which had been imposed for his second drink-driving offence.

Sheriff Alistair Watson deferred sentence until June 26 and called for background reports.

"It is a very serious matter," he told Dowling.

"Although you have pleaded guilty to cultivation, it is still much more serious than simple possession, because your activity was increasing the amount available in the jurisdiction."

And the sheriff warned: "I can give you no guarantees of what will happen here.

"You should prepare yourself for all eventualities."
