UK: Third cannabis bust in as many weeks
Bexhill-on-Sea Observer Friday 01 Jun 2012 Officers went to a top-floor flat in Woodville Road on Wednesday morning. As part of routine procedure they thoroughly searched the suspect premises. Sgt James Daniel, in charge of the police team, said: "We didn't find any counterfeit currency, but on climbing up into the loft an officer noticed a strange smell and found more than 70 cannabis plants being grown there. "They had actually been harvested and were being dried ready for distribution, so it was good to know we had prevented the drug from getting out onto the streets." It was the third success combating cannabis in as many weeks for the police, who discovered 200 cannabis plants, worth some £30,000 to illicit dealers, being cultivated in a warehouse at Brett Drive on May 10. The following week they seized a further 31 plants after raiding a flat in Reginald Road. Inspector James Scott, of Bexhill Police, said: "I'd like to make it very clear to anyone involved in the cultivation of cannabis that we are hot on your heels. "It's not difficult to see how successful we have been in closing down cannabis 'factories' in Bexhill recently and this will continue. "Lastly, I want to thank the community for reporting suspicious behaviour. Please keep it up. We will continue to react to community intelligence; only by receiving local information can we maintain our fight against the use and cultivation of illegal drugs in Rother." Cannabis is the most commonly used illegal drug, and has a Class B rating. It is an hallucinogen and is also known as marijuana, hashish, grass, puff, dope, pot or weed. Supplying it can lead to up to 14 years in prison plus an unlimited fine. A 24-year-old local man has been arrested and bailed to appear at Hastings Police Station on August 20 whilst further enquiries are made.
