UK: Top judge warns cannabis is a dangerous drug
Plymouth Herald Friday 01 Jun 2012 Resident Judge Francis Gilbert QC told Plymouth Crown Court: "Cannabis has become stronger and stronger. "It damages people's mental state and causes them to behave violently and unpredictably." Judge Gilbert was speaking out during the sentencing of teenager Joshua Watson, who last Christmas stole a flat-screen TV from a neighbour and sold it for £25 to a second-hand shop to buy cannabis. Sally Vince, for Watson, said that at the time he had been living in a hostel in Stonehouse but had now been taken in by his sister and brother-in-law, who were providing guidance, help and discipline. Judge Gilbert told Watson, aged 19 and of Granby Place, Devonport, that he had a bad record, with 11 juvenile court appearances. He had pleaded guilty to this, his second burglary, but faced a mandatory three-year jail term if convicted of burglary again in future. Judge Gilbert added: "Cannabis is the cause of your offending; I hope you realise it is a dangerous drug. "It is not the harmless drug people think. "You have a long life ahead of you provided you keep away from drugs, but not if you don't." He sentenced Watson to a 12-month community order with 12 months' supervision by the Probation Service, 200 hours of unpaid community work and a six-month drug rehabilitation requirement order. He told him: "You will find the unpaid work uses up your time, keeps you fit and gets you into work." "You will come into contact with people far worse off than you and tell yourself you are lucky." http://www.thisisplymouth.co.uk/judge-warns-cannabis-dangerous-drug/story-16258093-detail/story.html
