Daily Record (UK)
Saturday 03 Jun 2000 Subj: UK: Sco: Drug raid sparked jail riot Date: 3 Jun, 2000 Source: Daily Record (UK) DRUG RAID SPARKED JAIL RIOT A MASSIVE seizure of drugs sparked a seven-and-a-half hour siege at a prison. Rioting inmates at Glenochil Prison barricaded themselves into a wing, then trashed cells and rooms. They blocked off access to C Hall as negotiators tried to end the tense stand-off. The siege ended peacefully in the early hours of yesterday morning. Extensive damage was caused to C Hall and inmates were rehoused in other parts of the prison. Security at the jail, near Alloa, Clackmannanshire, was stepped up yesterday as staff began cleaning up. Prison governor Alec Spencer said: "A substantial quantity of heroin was found on a visitor to the jail, which I believe led to the incident. "The officers were very professional in their job and, although it took quite a long time to restore order, not one person was injured." Four years ago, prison officer Thomas Jones was held hostage at Glenochil. A year later, prison officer Willie Irvine and nurse Karen Kinnear were taken hostage in a 20-hour riot.
