UK: Cupboard cannabis man given suspended sentence

Sean Keywood

Exmouth Journal

Friday 08 Jun 2012

An Exmouth man has been given a suspended prison sentence after being caught growing cannabis plants in his home.

Daniel Littlewood, 34, of St Andrews Road, had previously pleaded guilty to production and possession of the drug.

Exeter Crown Court heard that Littlewood was initially arrested on February 6 this year on suspicion of stealing a painting – a charge that was later dropped.

However, when police searched his home they found 24 cannabis plants growing in a specially modified cupboard.

When interviewed by police, Littlewood said he had been growing the cannabis for his own use, so he could avoid contact with drug dealers, who had caused him problems in the past.

At the time of the offence, Littlewood was also subject to 10 conditional discharges for various offences.

Judge Philip Wassall, who told Littlewood he had "a dreadful record for drugs", sentenced him to 12 months' imprisonment for handling drugs, and 12 months for production, suspended for two years.
