UK: Cannabis dealer, 18, spared prison

Cambridge News

Monday 11 Jun 2012

A teenager involved in "large-scale street drug dealing" in Cambridge has been spared jail.

Although police only found a small amount of cannabis on Abdul Ali, 18, they found cash, a mobile phone and other paraphernalia to suggest drug dealing, Cambridge Crown Court heard on Friday.

Ali, of Darwin Drive, Cambridge, pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to supplying cannabis.

Prosecuting, Sara Walker said on August 6, last year, police went to his home address in connection with his brother and found a small amount of cannabis and a grinder in his bedroom.

Two days later, police saw a group in Akeman Street, Cambridge, surrounding a Vauxhall Astra and when approached Ali walked away, she said.

Just more than one gram of cannabis was found, along with a mobile phone, which he said was his.

Ms Walker said on August 25 he was arrested again in a "drug dealing area" and on him police found £210 cash. When they searched his house, six wraps of cannabis was recovered worth £60, £290 was discovered in a pillowcase and another phone was found.

She said: "Ali said the cash was legitimate and that drugs were for personal use.

"On the phone were nine or 10 text messages which showed he had been involved in drug dealing between July 9 and August 25. It showed that he had regular contact with one other person and they would work as a team, pulling together their resources to buy drugs and then pay off debts by selling.

"It suggests quite large-scale street drug dealing for commercial gain."

In mitigation, Mark McDonald said since his arrest, Ali had significantly reduced his own consumption of class B drugs.

Judge Jonathan Haworth said: "You were caught fairly and squarely supplying cannabis, you were doing it at a young age but you were doing it commercially and earning money for it.

"Even though you were arrested, you continued to do it."

Ali was given an eight month jail term, suspended for 18 months. He was given 12 months' supervision and a curfew for three months to stay at his home address from 9pm until 7am.
