Borneo: Filipina lecturer gets death for drug trafficking

Borneo Post

Friday 15 Jun 2012

SEREMBAN: A Filipina lecturer was sentenced to death by the High Court here yesterday after she was found guilty of trafficking in almost 12kg of cannabis into the country two years ago.

Justice Datuk Zulkifli Bakar handed down the sentence on Aida Dizon Garcia, 55, after finding that the defence had failed to raise reasonable doubts against the prosecution’s case.

Garcia was charged with trafficking in 11.956kg of cannabis at the Seremban toll plaza about 5.30am on Nov 27, 2010.

According to the facts of the case, the police, acting on a tip-off, stopped an express bus at the toll plaza and following a search, found 12 packages of cannabis, wrapped in transparent plastic sheets, in a bag which belonged to the woman.

The woman claimed to be a lecturer in animation at a private institution of higher learning in the country.

Earlier, her lawyer, Haresh Mahadevan, said his client had six grandchildren and this was her first offence.
