Hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of cannabis has been seized in Wellington in a major drug bust.

Police say the five month long investigation dubbed 'Operation Foxy' has severely impacted the cannabis supply chain in the Capital.

Detective Inspector Darrin Thomson says six search warrants were executed last night between Kilbirnie and Newtown and five people were arrested.

He says among them was a 68-year-old woman and a 47-year-old man, who are both charged with cultivating and selling the illegal drug.

Police believe the group has been operating for a number of years, during which time it was responsible for millions of dollars worth of drugs flowing into the community.
