Malta: Man jailed for drug trafficking Matthew Xuereb Times of Malta Friday 15 Jun 2012 Michael Portelli had been caught red-handed with several sachets of heroin mixed with diazepam, which increases the risk of an overdose, outside a school in ?amrun in April last year. He had also been in possession of six pieces of cannabis resin. He had admitted to selling drugs to sustain his habit in the three months before April, selling around 720 sachets of the drug. Magistrate Marseann Farrugia said the court wanted to make clear that selling drugs to finance an addiction was no excuse. People with a drug or family problems should seek help and not resort to trafficking, possibly ruining other people's lives. She noted in her judgement that since 2007, Mr Portelli had also been convicted for possession of a firearm, driving without insurance cover, theft, fraud and forging documents and possession of cannabis and had been issued with a probation order for theft. He had been given several chances to reform. She jailed him for six years and fined him €4,000. She added to his term another two years after converting a suspended jail term and three months for breach of a conditional discharge after having been caught in possession of cannabis. She recommended to the prison authorities to assist Mr Portelli with his drug addiction problem. http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20120615/local/man-jailed-for-drug-trafficking.424445
