US: Bozeman to consider extending cap on cannabis storefronts for another year Amanda Ricker Bozeman Daily Chronicle Friday 06 Jul 2012 Storefronts would be limited to 20. Currently, the city has five medical marijuana storefront licenses, according to a memo from Police Chief Ron Price to city commissioners. Medical marijuana operations, though, are not as visible as they used to be. Jim Gingery, director of the Montana Medical Growers Association, said some operators are likely holding onto their licenses while they wait to see what happens with Montana law. He said he hopes the City Commission will keep Bozeman's law as is. Price is recommending the city refrain from changing its laws related to medical marijuana until attempts at overturning state law have run their course. He and the City Attorney's Office are recommending the cap be extended for the second year in a row. State legislators last year passed a strict overhaul of the voter-approved law that allowed medical marijuana. The new rules effectively banned commercial operations, limiting each provider to three patients and prohibiting providers from accepting payment. But the new law is being challenged. The Montana Supreme Court is reviewing the law, and it will also appear on the November ballot for voters to endorse or reject. Meanwhile, a U.S. district court judge ruled earlier this year that Montana’s medical marijuana law does not shield providers from federal prosecution.
