UK: I was going to smoke 5kg of cannabis, claims accused

Maldon Standard

Thursday 12 Jul 2012

A JUDGE is being asked to rule on a dispute over a cannabis factory discovered at a house in Clacton.

A court heard today how police armed with a search warrant found the factory at a house in the town's Cotswold Road in December last year.

A total of 118 cannabis plants were found in a bedroom.

Experts estimated they would have yielded 5kg of cannabis worth £5,000.

Chelmsford Crown Court heard Raymond Smithers, 41, told police the cannabis was for his own use.

But the prosecution claimed the amount involved was too much for personal use.

A judge will now decide on the issue at a special hearing in the near future.

Smithers was granted bail until the next hearing.
