UK: Kent police post candidate Ian Driver calls for softer drug laws
Isle of Thanet Gazette Monday 16 Jul 2012 Ian Driver launched his bid for the new post last week and has pledged to lobby the Government to relax rules on soft drugs and introduce regulated prostitution. The independent representative of Northwood in Ramsgate said: "We need to review police priorities and particularly drug law and enforcement. Millions are spent for very little result. The war on drugs is a losing battle and we need to be think about a managed decriminalisation. "The big parties are frightened to talk about it but it would free up police time and resources to focus on burglary and violent crime that would make our communities safer." The strategy has been attacked by political opponents. Shadow cabinet member for community services Chris Wells said: "Do we need or want to encourage people to live their lives and retreat into a fantasy world of drugs? "The Commissioner needs to make a serious and real link between what the community want and the service the police deliver and I am not convinced the majority of people want to see this." Mr Driver is the only Thanet candidate so far to stand for the new post with the election taking place on November 15. Other candidates declared so far include Harriet Yeo (Labour, Ashford) and Craig Mackinlay (Conservative, Medway). http://www.thisiskent.co.uk/Kent-police-post-candidate-Ian-Driver-calls/story-16530505-detail/story.html
