A man has been arrested in connection with the seizure of around 50 kilos of cannabis at Newhaven docks.

29-year-old Oleg Leca, a Moldovan national living in Dublin, had arrived on a ferry from Dieppe on the morning of Friday 20 July.

He was arrested after packages of the drug were found concealed within the fuel tank of a car.

The cannabis had an estimated street value of between £100,000 and £150,000.

Leca was later charged with attempting to import a controlled drug and appeared before Brighton Magistrates on Saturday 21 July where he was remanded in custody to appear again on 30 July.

Carole Upshall, Border Force South director, said: "Border Force officers are on constant alert to keep illegal drugs and other banned substances out of the UK.

"Drug trafficking is a serious offence and those convicted face long prison sentences."
