UK: Drugs culture - that's Brockworth for you, judge told

Gloucester Citizen

Saturday 28 Jul 2012

COMMUNITY leaders have rubbished claims in court of a drug culture in Brockworth.

Adrian Chappell, 25, of Avon Crescent, did not have a good thing to say about Brockworth when he appeared at Gloucester Crown Court for a review of drug rehabilitation order.

Judge Jamie Tabor congratulated Chappell on five negative drug tests since his last review and said the key issue was to stay away from his former associates.

However, Chappell said it was difficult to stay away from the drug-taking culture.

"That's Brockworth for you," he told the judge.

"I don't know – bits of Brockworth are all right," said Judge Tabor.

But Chappell replied "Yes – where you see the sign as you are going out of Brockworth."

Chappell went from a £150-a-day heroin and cocaine habit to being clean at recent tests.

Chappell hit the headlines earlier this year when police raided his home during a children's party and seized nearly £2,000 worth of cannabis. Borough councillor Maureen Rowcliffe-Quarry, who works with youth community projects in Brockworth insists claims of a drug culture are nonsense.

"There will always be an exception to the rule but to say there is a drug culture in Brockworth is pretty wide of the mark," she said. "There may be isolated incidents but monthly reports show crime is falling. It is a lovely place to live."

Earlier this year, police made patrols around Mill Lane playing fields a priority after reports of drugs use there.

And several drug dealers have been brought to book including in March 2011, when a 27-year-old mum was found dealing Mephedrone from her Bronze Close home. James Chapman was jailed in 2009 after being caught with some of the strongest cocaine ever seized in the county.

A police spokesman said: "Brockworth is not generally a high crime area, and crime has been reducing steadily there."
