New Zealand: Jailed after drug convictions
Manawatu Chronicle Tuesday 31 Jul 2012 Graeme Pango Beatty, 54, was convicted of possession of cannabis for sale, possession of utensils for cannabis, possession of equipment for cultivation, theft and cultivation, having previously pleaded guilty. The drugs charges arose from a police search of his home in Taihape on September 30 last year, where 327g of cannabis head, worth between $4087 and $6540 was found. He admitted to growing cannabis plants the year before to provide the material found. Also recovered were utensils for consuming cannabis, including three pipes and a butane burner, equipment that could be used for cultivation, and $700 in cash. On June 5 this year, Beatty was at McDonald's in Taihape when a woman left her handbag behind on a table. He picked it up and tucked it under his arm, taking it around the back of the restaurant and putting it in a bin for searching later. The woman returned for her handbag but when asked, Beatty denied taking it. He was later caught out in his lie by CCTV. The handbag was recovered with all its contents. Beatty was also accused of selling cannabis, but his counsel Mark Bullock said there was evidence of one transaction and he denied any more than that. Crown prosecutor Jo Woodcock said the Crown relied on texts sent by the accused to an associate, the quantity of cannabis found and the large amount of cash found in his home in making the accusation. Mr Bullock said Beatty was a substantial cannabis user with dependencies, and the theft occurred during that time, when he had been a bit confused and out of sorts. Judge Cameron said Beatty had a criminal history of convictions dating back to 1973 which included previous drug convictions. His pre-sentence report noted he showed little remorse and recommended prison. Beatty was given leave to apply for home detention, and destruction of the utensils and equipment was ordered. The $700 cash found in the search was forfeited. http://www.wanganuichronicle.co.nz/news/jailed-after-drug-convictions/1486091/
