Cyprus: Pot farm uncovered
Cyprus Mail Wednesday 01 Aug 2012 According to the deputy chief of the drug squad YKAN, Nicos Nicolaou, police received a tip-off that cannabis plants were being cultivated in a secluded area of the Karderi part of Ypsonas. Nicolaou said the area was placed under "constant discreet surveillance", during which they spotted a 30-year-old arrive in his saloon car to water the plants. As he made to leave, YKAN cut him off and he was arrested. With information that the 30-year-old also kept cannabis plants in the Farsaris area of Ypsonas – which is controlled by the British sovereign bases – local police notified the bases’ authorities and both collaborated to put the area under observation. A 33-year-old Greek Cypriot on a moped arrived on the scene with a watering container, which he threw to the ground when he became aware of the police. He remained there until the bases' police investigated the area and found another six plants. The man told police he had been instructed by the 30-year-old to go and water the plants. According to Nicolaou, YKAN searched the suspect's home and found another two plants in close proximity, which the 30-year-old admitted were his. "In total, 15 plants were confiscated, which the 30-year-old suspect admitted to being his and for his own use," said Nicolaou. The 30-year-old was yesterday in hospital after complaining of a sore head, while the 33-year-old – along with the owner of the field where the first plants were found – were remanded for three days to assist investigations. Nicolaou said the main suspect was expected to be remanded last night. http://www.cyprus-mail.com/cyprus/pot-farm-uncovered/20120801
