The police uncovered Hungary's largest ever cannabis plantation in Petofibanya in the country's north, an investigations official at the Heves County police told MTI on Friday.

A total of 1,401 plants have been grown by a couple in a local warehouse, Janos Asztalos said. The couple stole electricity for the heat lamps that cost 64 million forints (EUR 220,700) for the supplier.

The street value of the cannabis is estimated at 300 million forints, Asztalos added.

The couple also grew cannabis at a plantation in southern Slovakia, where police seized appliances worth about 57,000 euros. The suspects employed eight illegal workers from Vietnam.

Altogether twelve people have been arrested in connection with the case.
