Former Emmerdale actor Seamus Gubbins could be jailed for up to five years after pleading guilty to running a cannabis farm at his home.

The Irish ex-soap star, who played character Ray Mullan, has also appeared in TV shows Heartbeat, Taggart, Waterloo Road and Casualty, pleaded guilty to production of a controlled Class B drug.

His barrister Stephen Polson told the court that Gubbins,47, from Kirkdale, Liverpool pleaded guilty on the basis that the drug was for his own use.

But prosecutor Jo Maxwell told North Liverpool Justice Centre that police had found 25 plants and 'a significant amount of equipment' and the prosecution rejected the basis of plea.

Judge David Fletcher adjourned the case until September 19 to determine the issue of whether the drug was for personal or commercial purposes.

Miss Maxwell told the court: 'He says that the cannabis was grown for his own personal use and not on a commercial basis.'

The estimated yield of the plants is two kilograms giving a value of between £12,500 and £24,800. This would give a custody range of between two and a half to five years.

The court heard that there were photographs of the production system and Judge Fletcher said: 'There is undoubtedly a set-up which is capable of something more adventurous. There is certainly a large amount of propagation equipment shown in the photographs.'

Father of two Gubbins played the part of Ray Mullan between 2001 and 2002.

He last appeared on British TV screens in 2011 in the drama 32 Brinkburn Street and has appeared in several films including the 1994 Robin Williams fantasy Being Human.

A recent report by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) revealed that the number of cannabis farms has more than doubled to 7,865 in the past four years.
