UK: Merseyside Police find drugs in day of Kirkby raids against suspected organised crooks Ben Rossington Liverpool Echo Thursday 09 Aug 2012 Officers spent yesterday searching 14 homes across Kirkby after launching a series of morning raids targeting those they believe to be involved in serious and organised crime and using guns to enforce their "business". They arrested 11 people – seven men and four women – before the day was out, found drugs at several properties and seized two dogs. The RSPCA was even called in when officers found an owl in one of the houses but the inspector allowed it to go back to its owner after deeming it was being kept legally. Among the drugs haul was a cannabis factory at various stages of growth, bags of cannabis ready to sell, 10kgs of what is believed to be amphetamine and blocks of cocaine found hidden under a shed. All of those arrested were taken to police stations across Merseyside and questioned throughout yesterday on a variety of offences including drug dealing, possession of a controlled drug, production of cannabis, criminal damage and assault of a police officer. Officers were also scouring an area of open land off Hall Lane, in Tower Hill, in the hunt for weapons. And officers from Knowsley Council and Knowsley Housing Trust also went around the properties to reinforce tenancy agreements and remind people if there is evidence they are involved in crime, they could lose their homes. Police said the operation, which saw scores of officers called in from across the force, was a pre-planned hit rather than a response to recent shootings. Superintendent Mark Harrison, who oversaw the raids, said: “This was the result of an extensive investigation by detectives. "Acting on information we carefully planned this initiative over several weeks and today's operation is just one example of the force’s commitment – with the support of the public and partner agencies – to tackle drug related crime and organised crime groups. "These arrests send out a clear message to those involved in organised crime and gun crime. Organised crime and the use of firearms blights our communities and puts ordinary law abiding people at risk. "I can reassure the public we will keep up the pressure on those people involved in serious criminality. We will put them on the back foot, we will pursue them relentlessly and we will put them before the courts to make our streets safer."
